Miller Grove High School Standout Named 2011-2012 Gatorade Georgia Boys Basketball Player of the Year

CHICAGO (March 22, 2012) — In its 27th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPNHS, today announced Tony Parker of Miller Grove High School as its 2011-12 Gatorade Georgia Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Parker is the first Gatorade Georgia Boys Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Miller Grove High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Parker as Georgia’s best high school boys basketball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced in March, Parker joins an elite alumni association of past state boys basketball award winners, including Dwight Howard (2003-04, SW Atlanta Christian Academy, Ga.), Chauncey Billups (1993-94 & 1994-95, George Washington HS, Colo.), Jason Kidd (1991-92, St. Joseph Notre Dame HS, Calif.), Paul Pierce (1994-95, Inglewood HS, Calif.) and Chris Bosh (2001-02, Lincoln HS, Texas).

The 6-foot-9, 270-pound senior power forward and center led the Wolverines to a 23-9 record and the Class AAAA state championship this past season. Parker averaged 16.2 points, 10.9 rebounds and three blocks per game. A 2012 McDonald’s All-American Game selection and a 2012 Jordan Brand Classic game invitee, Parker is the No. 21 ranked recruit in the Class of 2012 as rated by ESPNU.

Parker has maintained a 3.0 GPA in the classroom. He has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and has participated in food and clothing drives for needy families.

“Tony Parker has been a force in our region for the last two years,” said Adam Griffin, head coach at Dunwoody High. “His game has improved each year and he consistently plays hard no matter the outcome of the game.”

Parker remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by ESPNHS and the Gatorade high school sports leadership team, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.

Parker joins recent Gatorade Georgia Boys Basketball Players of the Year Shannon Scott (2010-11, Milton High School), Ryan Harrow (2009-10, Walton), Derrick Favors (2007-08 & 2008-09, South Atlanta High School), and Gani Lawal (2006–07, Norcross) among the state’s list of former award winners.

Bradley to be Inducted into National High School Hall of Fame

Ron Bradley, whose 49-year coaching career included stops at eight different high schools in Georgia, joins former Birmingham, Alabama high school star and Auburn Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan in the 2012 class of the National High School Hall of Fame.

Bradley, Sullivan and 10 others from around the country will be inducted into the NFHS National High School Hall of Fame July 11 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The 30th Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be the closing event of the 93rd annual NFHS Summer Meeting.

Bradley retired in 2010 with a record of 1,019-322 in boys basketball and 353-91 in girls basketball. His 1,019 victories in boys basketball ranks eighth all-time nationally. Bradley, whose longest coaching stints were at Newton County High School (21 years) and George Walton Academy (12 years), won three state championships in boys basketball. A three-sport star and 1953 graduate of Avondale High School in DeKalb County, Bradley also coached football (130-69-6) and baseball (158-60).

While at Newton County, Bradley’s teams established a national record by winning 129 consecutive home basketball games from Dec. 11, 1959 until Dec. 28, 1967.

The National High School Hall of Fame was started in 1982 by the NFHS to honor high school athletes, coaches, contest officials, administrators, performing arts coaches/directors and others for their extraordinary achievements and accomplishments in high school sports and activity programs. This year’s class increases the number in the Hall of Fame to 398.

The 12 individuals who will be inducted this summer were chosen after a two-level selection process involving a screening committee composed of active high school state association administrators, coaches and officials, and a final selection committee composed of coaches, former athletes, state association officials, media representatives and educational leaders. Nominations were made through NFHS member associations.

Washington County High School Standout Named 2011-2012 Gatorade Georgia Girls Basketball Player of the Year

CHICAGO (March 8, 2012) — In its 27th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPNHS, today announced Allisha Gray of Washington County High School as its 2011-12 Gatorade Georgia Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Gray is the first Gatorade Georgia Girls Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Washington County High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Gray as Georgia’s best high school girls basketball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award announced in March, Gray joins an elite alumni association of past state girls basketball award-winners, including Candace Parker (2003-04, 2002-03, & 2001-02, Naperville Central HS, Ill.), Diana Taurasi (1998-99 & 1999-00, Don Antonio Lugo HS, Calif.), Maya Moore (2005-06 Collins Hill HS, Ga.), Rashanda McCants (2004-05, Asheville HS, N.C.), Shyra Ely (1999-00, Ben Davis HS, Ind.) and Lisa Leslie (1988-89, Morningside HS, Calif.).

The 6-foot junior wing led the Golden Hawks to a 30-0 record and 61 consecutive victories along with a berth in the Class AAA state semifinals against North Hall High, scheduled for March 9. Gray averaged 32.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, 5.0 steals, 3.4 assists and 2.4 blocks per game entering the postseason final four. The returning Class AAA Player of the Year as named by the Georgia Sportswriters Association, Gray shot 67.0 percent from the field, 37.2 percent from 3-point range (51-139) and 80.4 percent from the free throw line through 30 games. A First Team All-Tournament selection at this past summer’s Nike Nationals, she carried Washington County to the 2010 Class AAA state championship as a sophomore.

Gray has maintained a 3.79 GPA in the classroom. A member of the Foreign Language Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America, she has donated her time as a student ambassador and on behalf of the school’s National Beta Club chapter.

“She has all the characteristics you are looking for in a high school athlete,” said Bernard Bowman, head coach at Glenn Hills High. “She has excellent athletic skills, outstanding academics and very good character. She carries herself in a way that would make you proud just to know her. I have been blessed just to watch her play the past two seasons.”

Gray will begin her senior year of high school this fall.
