High School Sports Media Etiquette and Coverage Guidelines

Credentials & Access

  • Check in with game management upon arrival
  • Credentials must be visible at all times
  • Access is a privilege, not a right
  • Restricted areas are off-limits unless approved

Sideline & Venue Conduct

  • Stay within designated media areas
  • Be aware of live play and officials
  • No coaching, cheering, or taunting
  • Keep equipment clear of walkways

Players & Coaches

  • No interviews during competition
  • Postgame interviews should be brief and respectful
  • Never approach injured players
  • Student-athletes are minors—maintain professionalism

Content & Ethics

  • Do not post injuries, fights, or private conversations
  • Avoid profanity or inflammatory language
  • Verify names, scores, and facts before posting Social Media Responsibility
  • Credit schools, athletes, and photographers
  • No locker room or team huddle footage
  • Avoid content that compromises competitive fairness

Photography & Video

  • No flash photography during live action
  • Do not block spectator views
  • Drone usage must follow school and state regulations

Officials & Game Management

  • Do not engage officials regarding calls
  • Follow all instructions immediately
  • Violations may result in revoked credentials

  • High school sports coverage should celebrate student-athletes, promote sportsmanship, and positively represent schools and communities
