Mizuno Performances of the Week - April 16

Welcome to Mizuno Performances of the Week for April 16, highlighting some of the state’s best and hottest baseball players. This weekly feature is compiled and written by Todd Holcomb. Here are some top individual performers from the recent games throughout the state:

*Appling County pitchers Jason Ammons and Joshua Atkinson pitched shutouts last week to help the Pirates clinch first place in their subregion of Region 2-AAA.Ammons went seven innings in a 6-0 victory over Long County, striking out seven and allowing four hits. He had two hits at the plate. Atkinson pitched a four-hit shutout with six strikeouts against Liberty County. Atkinson homered and drove in five runs. 

*Brookwood pitchers have pitched 25 straight scoreless innings covering 4 ½ games dating to a 9-1 victory over Lakeside-DeKalb on April 5. In that span, pitchers Lucas Brieske (11 innings), Jonah Daiss (6), Derrius York (4), Alex Flood (3) and Trace Twardoski (1) have allowed only seven hits. They’ve struck out 40 and walked one. Brookwood is 2007.

*Cook pitcher Tyler Weeks, entering in the second inning and his team trailing 2-0, pitched six shutout innings and struck out eight, allowing just four hits, in the Hornets’ 4-2 victory over Lowndes. Weeks also was sharp in his previous appearance, a complete-game 6-2 victory over Yulee of Florida.

*Jefferson pitcher Patrick Hickox pitched a four-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over St. Pius last week. Hickox struck out four and walked none in the seven-inning game that sparked the Dragons’ three-game sweep of St. Pius, which had not been shut out this season. Jefferson (17-7, 10-2) leads Region 8-AAAA with a week to play.

*Loganville pitcher Bay Witcher allowed an earned run on Friday for the first time this season in a 4-2 victory over Buford. Witcher maintained an 0.00 ERA through his first 39.1 innings. He who struck out nine and allowed five hits in the game between top-10 teams in Class AAAAA. Witcher is now 8-0 with an 0.33 ERA. 

*Lovett junior Will Seiler was 8-for-9 with two doubles, two triples and a home run in his team’s 4-0 week. Seiler scored 11 runs and drove in 12. He reached based in all 12 plate appearances with a walk, hit by pitch and reached on error.

*Mill Creek senior Davis Sharpe, a Clemson signee, pitched a seven-inning one-hitter in a 1-0 victory over North Gwinnett on Wednesday. Sharpe struck out nine. Mill Creek swept a three-game series in Region 6-AAAAAAA.  The teams entered the week tied for first.

*Shaw catcher Alex Marquand went 3-for-3 and hit his eighth home run of the season in a 10-4 victory over Hardaway on Thursday. 

*Taylor County senior right-hander Matt DeLoach struck out 11 and allowed just four hits in his team’s 2-1 victory over fifth-ranked Brookstone on Friday. It was Brookstone’s first loss in Region 4-A. Gunnar Watson, hitting .453 on the season, hit a two-run double for the lead in the sixth inning.
